How to Find Home Insurance Companies in My Area
Short answer
Start with your state insurance department, which licenses insurers and agents and often publishes consumer tools, complaint records or sample rates. An independent agent can check several companies at once, and direct insurers can be contacted individually. The 'best' or cheapest company depends on your home and coverage, so compare quotes on the same limits instead of relying on national rankings.

On this page
This site doesn’t publish a list of companies “near you” or rank insurers. Which companies are writing new policies changes with time, location and property type, and the best fit depends on your home. Here’s how to find and check options yourself.
Ways to find insurers writing in your area
| Route | How it helps |
|---|---|
| State insurance department | Licensed company lookups, consumer guides; some publish sample rates or premium surveys |
| Independent agent | Represents one or more insurers and can compare several at once |
| Direct insurer | Sells through its own employees, phone or website |
| Friends, neighbors, lender | Practical recommendations to verify |
California’s Department of Insurance describes independent agents, who may represent one or more licensed companies, and direct writers, which use their own employees, sales representatives and websites.
Official tools by state
- Texas: TDI points shoppers to HelpInsure.com for sample rates and suggests calling the TDI Help Line to check a company’s complaint record before buying.
- California: CDI offers premium surveys and a Home Insurance Finder tool to help identify insurers writing in high-risk regions, and suggests verifying an agent’s license.
- Other states: use your state’s insurance department site. Each location guide names the state regulator and summarizes local risks.
“Best” and “cheapest” depend on you
TDI’s saving guide reminds shoppers that a good price is only a bargain if you also get good service. Rankings can’t reflect your roof, claims history or coverage needs. Instead:
- Get quotes on the same dwelling limit, deductibles and liability limit.
- Ask what’s excluded and how the roof is settled.
- Check each company’s license and complaint record.
- Choose on coverage, service and price together.
See the comparison checklist and affordable coverage guide.
If few companies will write your home
Some areas have limited options. TDI notes insurers might not write policies in certain areas where storm or crime costs are higher. See what if no one will insure my home.
Calling this site
Calling the number on this site connects you with a licensed insurance agent who can review options that may be available for your home. It isn’t a directory of every insurer in your area.
By phone
What happens when you call
A conversation lets the agent ask about your specific home instead of relying on a generic online estimate. There are no online forms to fill out.
Describe your home
Share the address, size, age, construction, and roof or system updates. You do not need every detail to start.
Talk through coverage
Explain what you want covered and ask about limits, deductibles, and exclusions that apply to your property.
Compare and decide
Ask for the written quote terms and compare them before deciding. A call or a quote does not start coverage.
