How to Compare Home Insurance Quotes
An editorial method for comparing written home insurance quotes by coverage, deductibles, exclusions and full cost—not a carrier ranking.
This is an editorial shopping guide, not a comparison marketplace, insurer endorsement or “best companies” ranking. We have not tested carriers, verified partnerships or collected comparable insurer quotes. The method below focuses on documents you can request yourself.
Put comparable quotes side by side
Use the same address, property details, occupancy and intended effective date. Obtain the full written proposal and ask which parts remain subject to inspection or underwriting.
For each proposal, record:
- Insurer and form: the company issuing the policy, base form and endorsements.
- Limits: dwelling, other structures, belongings, liability and loss of use.
- Settlement: replacement cost or actual cash value, including any roof-specific treatment.
- Deductibles: all dollar and percentage amounts, including separate wind or hail terms.
- Exclusions and additions: water backup, flood, building-code upgrades and valuable items.
- Full price: policy-term premium, billing terms and fees disclosed in the proposal.
- Conditions: discount verification, inspection and binding requirements.
Why the lowest number may not win
The TDI guide explains that settlement basis, limits and deductibles change the amount available after a covered loss. A premium comparison that ignores those terms is incomplete. If you intentionally choose different terms, make the tradeoff explicit rather than calling the policies equivalent.
Research the insurer without invented ratings
Use your state’s insurance department to check the issuing company and available consumer information. Complaint measures and financial-strength assessments need their own context and dates; neither is an unconditional guarantee of future claim service. No rating, ranking or market-share claim is published here.
Questions to finish the comparison
Ask what is excluded, how a hypothetical covered loss would be settled and which policy documents support the explanation. Ask when coverage would actually take effect. Keep the final documents, not just a screenshot of the price.
Review cost, replacement cost versus ACV, cancellation versus nonrenewal and switching after a claim together. Calls to this site’s number request a home insurance quote; multi-carrier comparisons are not promised.
