You can ask another insurer about a future policy after filing a claim. Whether it will offer coverage, and on what terms, depends on its underwriting rules, the property, the loss history and applicable state law. A quote is not a promise of acceptance or a guarantee about price.

Keep the existing claim with the insurer that covered the loss

For an event that happened while your current policy was in force, contact that insurer using the claim number or policy documents. A later policy does not take over a prior loss or change the duties in the policy that applied when it happened. This site’s phone line handles quote requests, not claims.

Compare accurately

When shopping, answer questions about the loss and claim history truthfully. Ask each insurer what documents it needs and whether the property, occupancy and prior loss details match its quote. The Texas Department of Insurance notes that insurers may review claims history; that Texas guidance is not a universal eligibility or pricing rule.

Compare the proposed limits, deductibles, exclusions, roof terms and endorsements—not just the premium. Use the quote comparison checklist and review the homeowners coverage guide.

Avoid a coverage gap

Do not cancel the existing policy based only on an application or verbal estimate. Obtain written confirmation of the new insurer, insured property, terms and effective date first. If a loss is still open, continue working with the insurer handling that claim while you arrange any future policy.
