Choose a deductible by considering the amount you could pay after a loss, not just the premium reduction shown on a quote. Ask the agent for written options with otherwise comparable terms.

Check all deductibles

A policy may have more than one deductible. Ask about the standard amount and any separate wind, hail, earthquake or other peril deductible. If a deductible is expressed as a percentage, confirm the amount it is multiplied by; do not assume it is a percentage of the claim. See the wind and hail coverage guide for another policy-specific comparison.

Ask the insurer to translate percentage terms into a dollar amount using the proposed limit. This is not a prediction of a claim settlement.

Compare the tradeoff

Record the premium for each option and the amount you would bear for a relevant covered loss. Consider funds you could access promptly after damage. Avoid a deductible you could not reasonably handle solely to lower the bill.

Read the surrounding terms

Deductibles are only one part of payment. Actual cash value, exclusions and sublimits can also leave costs unpaid. The TDI guide discusses deductibles alongside dollar limits for this reason.

Use the deductible definition, cost guide and quote comparison checklist together. This site does not recommend a particular deductible or guarantee that changing it reduces your premium.
