There are several separate questions when a tree falls: damage to insured property, removal of the tree, debris cleanup and any responsibility between neighbors. One answer does not decide all four.

Describe what happened

Record the apparent cause, what was struck and whether access is blocked, if it is safe to do so. Do not approach unstable trees, damaged structures or electrical lines. Contact appropriate emergency services for immediate hazards.

Ask about each cost separately

  • Is the damaged building, fence or other structure insured?
  • Is the cause of the damage included under that coverage section?
  • What tree or debris removal wording, limit and deductible apply?
  • Is there coverage when no insured structure was damaged?
  • What documentation does the insurer need?

The TDI guide discusses structures and perils, but was not used to verify a universal tree-removal rule. Specific removal conditions remain on this draft’s source checklist.

A neighbor’s tree adds another question

Do not assume the neighbor must pay simply because the tree grew on their property. Liability depends on facts and applicable law, which this site has not researched. Report damage to your insurer and obtain qualified advice if a dispute arises.
