Loss-of-use wording addresses certain expenses or losses when a home cannot be used under specified conditions. The TDI guide describes additional living expenses associated with moving out while covered damage is repaired. Your policy’s trigger and limits must still be checked.

Additional expenses, not every normal bill

Ask which costs above your usual spending may qualify. Temporary housing, food or other expenses need to be documented under the policy’s rules. Do not assume every receipt is reimbursable or that a cash advance removes the need for records.

Check the limits and trigger

Ask about dollar and time limits, authorization of expenses and whether any provision applies when access is restricted without physical damage. A general evacuation notice does not automatically resolve these terms.

For a rental property, rental-income wording is a separate review; do not substitute an owner-occupied additional living expense explanation.

Keep a record

Ask the insurer how to submit receipts and document ordinary versus additional expenses. Keep communications and payment explanations with the claim file.

Read loss of use, claims preparation and landlord insurance for related distinctions. This site’s quote line does not approve claim expenses.
