Glossary Definition
Replacement Cost
A repair or replacement valuation basis that still depends on policy limits, deductibles and conditions.
Replacement cost refers to repair or replacement at current prices rather than a settlement reduced for depreciation. The TDI guide contrasts it with actual cash value.
Not an unlimited promise
Check the insured limit, deductible and conditions for repair or replacement. Ask whether building, roof and belongings use the same settlement basis and whether payment occurs in stages.
Do not substitute sale price, land value or mortgage balance for a rebuilding estimate. “Extended” or “guaranteed” replacement wording needs its own contract review.
Read replacement cost versus actual cash value and dwelling coverage for related decisions.
