Theft is listed as a common covered peril in the TDI homeowners guide, but the actual policy determines who and what is insured, which exclusions apply and how much can be paid.

Check belongings limits and valuation

Review the personal property limit and category limits for jewelry, art or other valuables. Ask whether settlement is replacement cost or actual cash value and what documentation is required for an item scheduled separately.

If belongings were outside the home, ask about the relevant off-premises terms rather than assuming the full home limit applies. Explain business use, shared ownership or an item belonging to someone else.

Document safely

If there is an immediate danger, prioritize safety and appropriate emergency assistance. Contact the insurer about reporting requirements and keep any police report information it requests.

An inventory with descriptions, photographs, purchase records and serial numbers can support the claim discussion. It does not guarantee reimbursement. Avoid posting sensitive inventory details publicly.

Before buying

Ask how deductibles, valuable-item endorsements and exclusions affect the belongings you actually own. Read replacement cost versus ACV and homeowners coverage alongside the proposed quote.
