There is no single answer for every policy. A homeowners policy can combine protection for the home, belongings, certain additional living expenses and liability, but each section has its own triggers and limits.

Use three questions for each loss

  1. Is the property or person insured? A dwelling, detached structure and item of jewelry may fall under different sections.
  2. Is the cause of loss included? Read the covered perils and exclusions, including endorsements that change them.
  3. What limits and conditions apply? Check deductible, settlement basis, sublimits and duties after loss.

The TDI guide describes six common sections: dwelling, other structures, personal property, additional living expenses, personal liability and medical payments. Use those categories to find terms in your documents; do not assume identical terms in another form.

Look beyond the declarations page

The declarations page summarizes a policy. Exclusions, definitions and claim conditions usually require the form and endorsements. Ask the insurer for the full set of documents and an explanation of missing or unfamiliar terms.

Coverage gaps to discuss

Ask separately about flood, water damage, maintenance, earth movement, valuable belongings and business or rental use. “Water” and “storm” are not single coverage categories.

For shopping, use the homeowners pillar and comparison checklist. Do not rely on a general article to predict a claim payment.
