Coverage depends on the cause of the water, the policy and the facts of the damage. A burst pipe, repeated seepage, sewer backup and surface flooding should not be treated as the same event.

Identify the cause before looking for an answer

The TDI guide distinguishes sudden accidental water releases from continuous leaks and flood. It also identifies sewer or drain backup as a possible endorsement topic. Your own form may have different exclusions and limits.

Tell the insurer where the water came from, when it was discovered and what was damaged. Ask it to distinguish damage to the building or belongings from repair of the pipe, appliance or other source. Do not assume those costs receive identical treatment.

Questions to ask

  • What exclusion or covered-peril wording applies?
  • Is there a water-specific endorsement, limit or deductible?
  • Does the policy distinguish hidden leakage from repeated or long-term seepage?
  • Is resulting mold treated separately?
  • What documentation and mitigation duties apply?

If damage has already occurred

Prioritize safety. Contact the insurer promptly, document damage when safe and ask about reasonable temporary measures. Keep receipts and records of the cause, repair work and communications. This site’s quote line is not a claims-reporting or emergency service.

Read flood coverage, water backup and mold for distinct questions. A general guide does not establish whether your claim is covered.
