Do not assume that coverage for a sudden pipe leak also covers sewer or drain backup. The TDI guide lists backup of sewers or drains as an endorsement topic. Your policy and any add-on wording must be checked.

Read the endorsement, not just its name

Ask which events qualify, whether sump-related failures are included and what exclusions remain. An endorsement described as “water backup” does not establish that all water entering a basement or lower level is insured.

Check the limit, deductible, settlement basis and whether cleanup, building damage and belongings share a limit. Ask whether the endorsement changes any other condition in the policy.

Keep flood separate

Discuss outside flooding under flood coverage rather than treating a backup endorsement as a substitute. If multiple causes are involved, give the insurer the complete facts.

Before renewing or reporting damage

For shopping, request the actual endorsement and a written explanation of its scope. For an existing event, contact the insurer about notice, documentation and safe mitigation; do not wait for a quote call to determine coverage.

See the water backup definition and broader water damage guide. No endorsement availability is guaranteed through this site.
