On the Gulf Coast, the document that can matter most in a quote conversation is often not the homeowners application at all but an elevation certificate. Gulfport’s Building Code Services publishes flood information that helps you find out what records may exist for your home.
What an elevation certificate is
An elevation certificate is a FEMA form completed by a surveyor or engineer that records a building’s elevation relative to the base flood elevation. Gulfport’s Building Code Services page offers the FEMA form and instructions in connection with construction in flood-prone areas. If your home was built or substantially improved under floodplain rules, a certificate may already exist. Ask the city whether one is on file before paying for a new survey.
Use the city’s flood information page
The city’s flood information page gathers floodplain map documents and flood protection material. Use it to learn the vocabulary, then confirm any specific property’s status through official FEMA maps or the city. We do not determine flood zones.
Three policies, one house
Coastal homes may need separate pieces:
| Piece | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Homeowners policy | Is windstorm excluded? |
| Wind coverage | If excluded, where does wind coverage come from and what is the deductible? |
| Flood policy | Does an elevation certificate affect the flood quote? |
Our Mississippi guide explains the state wind pool, and MID’s hurricane checklist suggests reviewing wind and flood before storm season. See also our flooding question.
After a storm
Repairs in a floodplain can trigger permit review. Keep permits and photos; they help with later quotes and with ordinance or law questions. Report claims to your insurer, not to a quote line.
Next step
Compare other Mississippi pages for Jackson and Southaven. Then call for a free quote. HomeInsurerQuotes.org connects callers with a licensed insurance agent; carriers, pricing and eligibility vary, and not all callers qualify.
By phone
What happens when you call
A conversation lets the agent ask about your specific home instead of relying on a generic online estimate. There are no online forms to fill out.
Describe your home
Share the address, size, age, construction, and roof or system updates. You do not need every detail to start.
Talk through coverage
Explain what you want covered and ask about limits, deductibles, and exclusions that apply to your property.
Compare and decide
Ask for the written quote terms and compare them before deciding. A call or a quote does not start coverage.
