If your Bridgeport home is a multi-family house with decades of changes behind it, records matter. When you shop for insurance, the agent will ask about the roof, heating, electrical and number of units. Bridgeport’s Building Department records can help you answer accurately.
Two ways to get Bridgeport building records
For current or recent permits, the Building Department directs applicants to the Park City Portal, where permits are applied for and their status checked.
For older history on a property, the city’s record search request page says searches go through the city’s Freedom of Information request process and are handled in the order received. Plan ahead — this is not instant. If you are buying a home, request records early.
Two-, three- and four-family homes
If you live in one unit and rent the others, tell every agent exactly how many units there are and which you occupy. Owner-occupied multi-family homes may be written on a homeowners form in some cases and on a landlord form in others. See landlord vs. homeowners insurance and our landlord insurance guide. Ask about:
- liability limits that reflect tenants and visitors;
- loss of use or fair rental value if units become uninhabitable;
- whether tenants are expected to carry renters insurance.
Systems in older housing
Agents commonly ask about heating type, electrical service and plumbing. Permit records for a boiler, panel upgrade or re-pipe give you dates. If a system is original and you do not know its age, say so.
Coastal and flood questions
Parts of Bridgeport are near Long Island Sound. A homeowners policy generally excludes flood; ask about separate flood coverage and read our flooding question. This page does not determine whether any property is in a flood zone.
State guidance and next step
The Connecticut guide summarizes the Insurance Department’s homeowner resources, including its homeowner and renter page. When your records are ready, call for a free quote. HomeInsurerQuotes.org connects callers with a licensed insurance agent; carriers, pricing and eligibility vary, and not every caller qualifies.
By phone
What happens when you call
A conversation lets the agent ask about your specific home instead of relying on a generic online estimate. There are no online forms to fill out.
Describe your home
Share the address, size, age, construction, and roof or system updates. You do not need every detail to start.
Talk through coverage
Explain what you want covered and ask about limits, deductibles, and exclusions that apply to your property.
Compare and decide
Ask for the written quote terms and compare them before deciding. A call or a quote does not start coverage.
